Wife: “Dear, today is 14 February leh~”
Wife: “What did you get for me~”
You know you are in hot soup when Valentine’s Day slips off your mind and you are caught pants-down, unprepared. I quote William Congreve: “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned “ You don’t want to get on the wrong side of your lady.
For all the young couples out there, you may be puzzled and confused over how couples can actually forget about such an important occasion. Believe it or not, when you enter the workforce, “monthsaries”, “anniversaries”, “first-datery”, Valentine’s Day and all the other mushy-yet-insignificant romantic shenanigans are NOT your top priority, unless, of course, you don’t have a mortgage, car loan and bills to pay. Where are the kids anyway?
Last minute shopping is also off the table because:
1. Such an attempt is, at best, feeble.
2. You won’t even have the time.
However, from this Valentine’s Day, there will be no such thing as “no time” because we will teach you the 4 most convenient yet touching methods to celebrate your Valentine’s night. Not making the effort to do at least 2 of these things just makes you a slob.
1) Write a heartfelt letter (less than 30 minutes)
Before you cross this idea out, let me emphasize that you don’t need to match the works of The Bard, neither do you need extravagant romantic gestures to tell your soulmate how much they mean to you.
All you need to do is pour your sincerest thoughts into writing and tell her exactly what you love about her and thank her for being such an indispensable part of your life and that she brings out the best in you (Hints) ; it’ll be the perfect gift for your partner. To beef up your letter, add a personal touch by including some inside jokes that only both of you can understand or recount some of the beautiful (preferably embarrassing) memories both of you shared.
2) Prepare A Meal for her (about 2 hours)
Save the money from eating out and invest in some good ingredients to prepare a meal for your partner. Nothing speaks more your other half more than showing them that they are worth going the extra mile for.
DISCLAIMER: Forget about this if you have zero knowledge on cooking because things can get really disastrous if a fire breaks out and totally ruin the mood of the of the meal. One way to ensure success is to practice beforehand!
You know what they say, Love is Blind; Love is also Ageusia (impaired sense of taste). No matter how horrible the meal is, your partner would deeply appreciate the gesture and shower you with compliments, so don’t worry about it tasting great. Ultimately, it’s the thought that counts; what your partner sees is love and effort you put in when you prepare a meal for her.
3) Hand-made Gifts (40 minutes)
“But it is a cold, lifeless business when you go to the shops to buy something, which does not represent your life and talent, but a goldsmith’s.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
So why bother spending hours hunting for a four thousand dollar gift which doesn’t represent both of you? Go DIY! Be it origami, a scrapbook or sew inga cushion for her, the sincerity and love is always doubled compared to buying a gift that she might not even want.
The Internet is your best guide if you are stuck at certain steps, I am sure that there are Youtube videos which can help you. Afterall, it is the sweat and tears invested into this gift-making which makes it so special and cherished.
Spend the night by having a movie marathon at home! While you arrange and plan what the different movies to watch, put in the effort to select those that have some form of significance in the relationship. For example, you might want to consider the movie which both of you watched on your very first date or the one which left both of you screaming and running out of the theatres. These are important milestones in your relationship and it’ll be like rewatching your relationship being played out on screen.
Who says you’ve got to spend a bomb or spend months of planning to create the perfect Valentine’s night? It is usually the simplest acts which create the most memorable Valentine’s experiences. Try to incorporate as many suggestions as possible and have a great Valentine’s Day this year!
